The Medieval period developed across Europe from approximately the 5th to the 15th century, following the decline of the Western Roman Empire. Architecture during this period evolved from massive and defensive forms into increasingly sophisticated structural systems characterized by soaring interiors, complex vaulting, and richly articulated religious buildings.
