A major architectural treatise documenting the history, design, construction, and architectural development of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican complex in Rome. Written and illustrated under the direction of Carlo Fontana, the work combines extensive historical and architectural text with detailed engraved plates, including plans, elevations, sections, perspectives, construction diagrams, architectural details, and studies of the basilica and its associated structures. Organized into seven books and published with parallel Italian and Latin text, the volume also documents important engineering and construction operations connected with the Vatican, including the transport and erection of the Vatican Obelisk. The engraved plates were largely executed by Alessandro Specchi after designs by Carlo Fontana. Published in Rome in 1694, the work is an important primary source for the study of St. Peter’s Basilica, Roman Baroque architecture, architectural history, construction methods, and seventeenth-century architectural documentation.
